Traditional amplifier designs suffer from distortion generated in the output stage. Referred to as crossover distortion, it occurs when the output signal switches from positive to negative voltage, i.e., when the speaker diaphragm changes from forward excursion velocity to rearward excursion velocity, and it happens many thousands of times per second to produce the musical sound we hear. At each of these times, the transistors that produce the positive voltage must handoff duty to those that produce the negative voltage, and the handoff is non-linear and generates distortion. In the most expensive designs this problem is addressed by keeping both sets of transistors “on” for the entire time, thus eliminating the switching entirely. This configuration is known as Class-A. The byproducts of Class-A are large amounts of energy consumed at all times, and large amounts of heat delivered to the listening room. To support this mode of operation the amplifier must be equipped with large heat sinks and numerous output transistors to prevent over-heating. The amplifiers are characteristically large and extremely heavy, and while sonically superior to the more conventional class A-B operating products, they can be sluggish due to the number of transistors involved.

At Bella Sound, we favor innovation over reincarnation of the same basic amplifier that has been rebranded for decades now. To handle the aforementioned problems, we developed a smart power supply that actively participates in the generation of the audio output signal. Working alongside the output transistors, this supply allows for Class-A-B operation without the generation of audible crossover distortion, and without the generation of excessive heat. Further, the smart supply greatly reduces the distortion each transistor generates by neutralizing transistor self-distortion where it is generated, inside the transistor. Because less heat is being generated to eliminate crossover distortion, fewer output transistors are needed. The result is an extremely fast and musical output stage that uses far less energy, produced much less heat, and permits a much smaller product package, all while controlling distortion to inaudible levels.

When this is combined with numerous other innovations, such as power supply music rails, AC input quantum purification, separate front-end and output stage power supplies, and straight wire voicing, the result is a robustly powerful amplifier that is lightning fast, that will not compress, that is sweet and liquid from the first milliwatt to full power, that does not add any coloration or sound stage compression whatsoever. I put on a 96kHz/24-bit download of Invincible, [Michael Jackson's] ... last studio album. It's not my favorite Michael Jackson. A lot of the dance numbers seem almost too aggressive in nature with a bit of hard edge. One exception to that is the track "You Rock My World." The Bella Sound amps absolutely owned this track. They locked down the groove with uncanny grip and traction. The bass boogied hard and the music swept you away. Midrange was focused and the highs were extended.
